Postgraduate Education in Nutrition
DON Yearly Symposia
Each year several symposia are held under the auspices of the DON. A brief description of each symposium follows.
Each year the DON selects a "cutting edge" topic in nutritional research to present. Authorities on this topic from North American and elsewhere are invited to present. Representatives from food industry, nutrition researchers, nutritionists and physicians are invited to attend and participate in the active discussion. The symposium is published in THE AMERICAN JOURNAL OF CLINICAL NUTRITION, as a supplement for wider dissemination of the presentations. Details on the 2009 event - The 11th Annual Spring Symposium: Protective Nutrients: Are They Here to Stay? - are available here. Webcasts of all Symposia are also available following the event.
Webcasts of past national symposia sponsored by the DON are posted, as well. These include:
The Health Impact of Active Cultures: Probiotics, The American Association of Family Practice, September, 2006.
Probiotics and Intestinal Health in Children, American Academy of Pediatrics, October, 2005.
In conjunction with the DON, this center at Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital sponsors an annual symposium on nutrition care. This popular symposium for nutritionists provides the most updated studies on parenteral and enteral nutrition, discussions associated with nutrition and nutrients and dietary care (dietary supplements, probiotics, etc.).
The HCNRC and Boston Obesity Center at Boston University have previously co-sponsored a monthly dinner meeting at the MIT Faculty Club. Authorities in emerging fields of nutrition research were invited to speak. Nutrition investigators from the Boston area attended this popular program. This program has been discontinued, but previous speakers and topics are listed in our site.
The nutritionists and physicians from the Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Children’s Hospital and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center meet monthly in the Medical Education Center at Harvard Medical School to consider case discussions and practical clinical didactic topics of importance in the care of pediatric and adult patients. Lunch is served with this conference. For further information or to be added to the e-mail list, contact Sally Burke by e-mail.
The Department of Nutrition at the Harvard School of Public Health sponsors a weekly symposium to review the latest findings in nutritional epidemiology, nutritional biochemistry and nutrition clinical education. For further information or to be added to the e-mail list, contact Colleen Bertrand by e-mail.
