W. Scott Butsch, MD MSc

Elizabeth G. Armstrong, Ph.DDr. Butsch is an obesity medicine physician at the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) Weight Center and an Instructor in Medicine at Harvard Medical School (HMS). He completed a clinical nutrition fellowship at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and was one of the two inaugural fellows in obesity medicine and nutrition subspecialty fellowship program, first established at the MGH/HMS in 2007. He is a diplomat of the American Board of Obesity Medicine and a Fellow of The Obesity Society (TOS).

His academic interests focus in obesity and nutrition education. He has served as a codirector of the 2nd year HMS course, Introduction to Clinical Nutrition and is a leader in education in the Division of Nutrition at HMS. He was a Charles Prout fellow in Medical Education at HMS in 2010 and has focused on undergraduate and post-graduate curriculum development on nutrition and obesity at the regional and national levels. In 2014, he co-founded the Obesity Medicine education interest group at TOS to create core competencies in obesity. He has continued this work as a member on the steering committee of the Obesity Medicine Education Collaborative, as a member of an education and training working group at the National Academic of Medicine, and more recently as a chair of the New England Nutrition Education Summit.

Dr. Butsch is a clinical educator and enjoys teaching clinical nutrition and obesity medicine at all levels of medical education at MGH and HMS. His passion for teaching can be seen in the numerous educational programs he has created, whether for medical students in his HMS course, for medicine residents as a co-investigator in two 4-year a HRSA federal grants designed to train physicians in obesity medicine, or for practicing physicians and allied health providers as a co-director of the Harvard CME Blackburn Course in Obesity Medicine and co-creator of its Obesity Medicine Board Review course.

Lastly, he is an author of several chapters and manuscripts and lectures nationally and internationally on pharmacological treatment of obesity and the management of bariatric surgical patients. In line with his passion for the education and treatment of obesity, Dr. Butsch is a strong advocate for his patients. As the Chair of the Committee on Nutrition and Physical Activity in the Massachusetts Medical Society and the Chair of the Advocacy committee in TOS, Dr Butsch actively participates at both the state and federal levels to reduce weight stigma and discrimination and improve coverage and reimbursement for the treatment of obesity.
